Akeley

Akeley is the birthplace of the legendary Paul Bunyan, greatest lumberjack ever and pay homage during Paul Bunyan Days at the end of June. All year, visitors enjoy a 31-foot statue of a kneeling Paul whose extended hand provides a perfect platform for a photograph or two. The statue is located at Paul's Patio, a favorite stopping place for bicyclists on the Heartland Trail. The park has a picnic area, covered pavilion and historical museum. Akeley and the Red River Lumber Co. prospered on the south shore of 11th Crow Wing Lake at the turn of the century when Akeley's sawmill was the second largest in the state. Today the lake is better known as the headwaters of the Crow Wing Chain, 11 lakes that flow into the Crow Wing River. A favorite place for ATVers, Akeley also is home to the Woodtick Musical Theater and the new Minnesota Folklore Theater. For more information see: http://www.akeleyminnesota.com/city.htm
