Itasca State Park
A community in and unto itself, Minnesota's oldest and most popular state park surrounds the headwaters of the Mississippi River. The park covers more than 32,000 acres and offers an unending list of things to do and see...but first and foremost is the traditional barefoot walk (be sure to bring a towel) across the tiny, crystal clear stream that becomes the continent's largest and most important river as it flows to the Gulf of Mexico. You can stay right in the park at a number of places, including the turn-of-the-century Douglas Lodge. For more information see: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/itasca.
