Waubun

Waubun is an Ojibwe word meaning "the east," "the morning," and "the twilight of the dawn." Spelled "wabun" by Longfellow in "The Song of Hiawatha," the definition means "the east wind." The railroad builders who came through in 1903-1904 named stations as they moved the line north, and all towns on the reservation had to be Indian names. Waubun lies on the perimeter of the White Earth State Forest. The spectacular Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge southeast of the community is renowned for its birdwatching and other wildlife discovery opportunities.
